The New Zealand speedway community is united in grief following the tragic death of driver Paul Simon at a private track in Waldronville, Dunedin. The incident, which occurred during night two of the ‘Modified Thunder’ event, has cast a profound shadow over the sport, prompting an outpouring of condolences and remembrance for a man described as “a true legend of the sport and an even better bloke off the track.”

Emergency services were called to the scene last evening, but despite their efforts, Simon’s life could not be saved. In the wake of this devastating loss, Speedway New Zealand General Manager Zoe Irons has confirmed a thorough investigation is underway, emphasising that competitor safety remains the organisation’s highest priority.

“Speedway New Zealand extends its deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased, as well as to our wider speedway community during this difficult time,” Irons stated. The sentiment is echoed from clubs across the nation, from Beachlands Speedway to Nelson Speedway and beyond, all standing in solidarity with the Simon family.

Paul Simon was more than a competitor; he was a cherished part of the speedway fabric—a family man within a larger racing family. His passing is felt not just as the loss of a skilled motorcycle and stock car racer, but as the loss of a friend, a mentor, and a character whose presence enriched the paddock.

As the community grapples with this tragedy, the focus turns to supporting his family, friends, and his home club at Beachlands Speedway. In this time of immense sorrow, may they find some comfort in the countless memories of Paul’s passion, his spirit, and the indelible mark he left on New Zealand speedway. Our thoughts are with you all.

Nelson Speedway, and the wider racing fraternity, extends our deepest condolences to the Simon Family, friends, and the entire Beachlands Speedway community. Our thoughts are fiercely with you all during this impossibly difficult time. May you find some comfort in the incredible memories created and strength in the unwavering support of your speedway whānau.

Paul was a formidable competitor, a true legend of the sport whether on two wheels at the motorcycle speedway or in stock car racing. His passion was the heartbeat of the paddock. Yet, beyond the helmet and the roar of the engine, he was remembered even more fondly as an even better bloke off the track—a man of character, camaraderie, and kindness.
